Kasabian Football Hero

The Mightiest Crumb has recently secured himself a few tickets to World Cup 2010 in South Africa and will progressively be getting more and more charged about said event over the next 8 months (assuming he lands a miracle to finance his travels). In the spirit of daft and insane socceries, I couldn't help but post this video of some English footballers and their attempt to coalesce the world's most popular sport with the world's (or at least the USA's) most popular contemporary video game. Behold, Kasabian Football Hero!

Lickshot Launch Party

Last night The Mightiest Crumb was fortunate enough to attend the launch party for Ben Watts' new book Lickshot: a photo scrapbook. Hosted at the Hudson Hotel and sponsored by Moët & Chandon. The party drew quite a fun and fashionable crowd including Ben's sis Naomi and hubby Liev. The book has already garnered heaps of good press and should manage to be a success for the talented photog. Congrat's Ben on a great book with serious attitude and a successful launch!

Also thanks Moët & Chandon, though I think I'll stay away from champagne from now on. It's bad news for me.

Balenciaga RTW Spring 2010

Balenciaga's SS10 collection had landed. Every time Paris fashion week pops up like a snooty hurrah to it's predecessors-- face it, we're talking high fashion heavy hitters here, not your run of the mill Nutella smuggling crepe peddlers-- this Crumb gets very excited to see what Monsieur Ghesquiere will be sending down the runway. Here is a taste.
It's hard to tell what inspirations from the depths of Critobal's archives have been resurrected in Nicolas' new collection. Regardless, it's edgy, chic, brimming with his signature futurism and unmistakably Balenciaga.

Greg Lauren - Alterations: New Works on Paper

Greg Lauren - artist, designer and nephew of Ralph has just opened a new and very impressive installation titled Alterations: New Works on Paper. I had the pleasure of attending the opening last night thanks to the stellar Kelly Cutrone and her team at Peoples Revolution.

The event attracted the likes of Gerard Butler, Sante D'Orazio, Elizabeth "Jessie Spano" Berkley, Samantha Mathis and, my personal favorite, the lovely and talented Parker Posey and her dog Gracie. The real star however was the immaculately constructed paper garments on display.

Greg Lauren really brings a new synthesis to art and fashion with his work. Everything from perfectly tailored suits, boho vests, oxford shirts, a boxing robe, a variety of ties and even shoes are constructed out of paper.

There is even a glimpse of what his laboratory for crafting such works of wearable art may look like - a tornado's remnants of newspaper, catalogs, comics, fine Japanese paper, tools, swatches, ropes, garments and sewing materials as the inspirational drawing board and workshop for the perfect paper suit.

The exhibition runs through Nov. 1st at 28 Wooster St. in SoHo, NYC.

Françoise Nielly

I've just become aware of French artist Françoise Nielly. Her portraits are absolutely stunning. Armed with oil and knife she sculpts her pieces with sensual and explosive color. Her style fascinates me and I one day hope to see her work in person and god willing decorate my walls with it. Check her out here. Watch the video here.

Crumberazzi - NY Fashion Week

The Mightiest Crumb was fortuitously strolling past as the marc by marc show was getting out. As the who's who of fashion editors and socialites made their exodus to the streets, I managed to have a close encounter and snap a photo of none other than Carine Roitfeld, editor in chief for French Vogue. Ms. Roitfeld is one of my favorite figures in the industry and I think that she and her daughter Julia make a stunning French fashion duo. Voila!

Jeremy Scott F/W 09 preview vid

Check out this preview vid of Jeremy Scott's upcoming F/W '09 collection of Adidas Originals. This guy is out of this world and how can you not love it. His clothes go to a whole other hiptosphere of the ether - a place where a lot of other designers want to visit but are too scared. You have to give it up for Adidas too. The 3 stripes are known for collaborating with some unique heavy hitters in the fashion industry - Yohji Yamamoto, the undisputed King of the fresh tailored asymmetrical black. I've had the pleasure of seeing some of this collection up close and I have to say it really makes you want to shed your safeguards and break out into the world in a big way. I picture myself wearing the Tiger sweats head to toe in the back of a souped up pick-up truck screaming through Cental Park waving an African flag in the air to the tune of Africa by Toto (okay that's a little bizarre and possibly inappropriate but this is what I mean by the effect his clothes can have on a person). Loving the now and looking forward to the future of J. Scott.

Bande a part - cafe dance (1964)

Some of you may be aware by now that tMc is a mighty mighty fan of Jean-Luc Godard. For your enjoyment I submit this clip of one of the best dance scenes in cinema history. This is the cafe dance scene in Godard's Bande a Part, aka "Band of Outsiders" in the U.S. Consequently, this movie (along with Godard's work in general) was the inspiration for the impeccably tailored designer label Band of Outsiders. Furthermore, this film impressed Quentin Tarantino so much that he named his production company A Band Apart. If you have not seen this film in it's entirety then I highly suggest you do. Enjoy

Side note - it must be noted that this scene also includes Anna Karina, Godard's muse and at one point wife, and in this crumb's opinion the most beautiful woman to ever grace the silver screen.

Trousers

Trousers jeans, out of London, made in Italy, HUGE in Japan. Once again a product that this M. Crumb would like to purchase here in his homeland. Launched during London fashion week 2008, these fresh and future-focused yet domestically unknown denimites have since spurred a cult following in Japan - the Japanese are big into their quality denim. To boot, these trousers are "not born of exploitation" and crafted from ecologically friendly materials, organic premium denim - cage free? Either way, I will feel even cooler when I cop a pair of these eco-friendly fly Nippon knickers.

Apache wear

This Fall the Mightiest Crumb is going Apache. Out of A Child Of The Jago, Joe Corre's Terrorist line includes several Apache inspired garments. Cashmere Apache print hoodies (I'll take on in every color please), new custom made embossed Apache belt (Below) and rugged Apache war pants with leather fringe.
In the spirit of the mighty Geronimo "one who yawns," (they even have a soft bamboo fabric t-shirt featuring the great leader himself) I will suit up and take to the street of NYC wearing this modern salute to the proud Native American spirit - be he friend or foe!

The Crumberazzi

Well well well... who do we have here? Brace yourselves you CW watching gossip mongers, it's none other than Leighton Meester aka Blair Waldorf saying a quick hello to Kelly Rutherford aka Lily van der Woodsen and her fresh little baby on route to the Gossip Girl set at the National Arts Club in Gramercy. Little did she know she was standing right in the Mightest Crumb's way as I gobbled up some Bravo pizza on my way back to the office. Could that strapping tall man in the black t-shirt following in tow be her new love interest? All I know is that I could have done without the sea of giddy teenies and their flashing Sony Cyber-Shot cameras as I passed her by. I'm pretty sure I overheard one dark little fan girl in the back mumbling about a nefarious plan to kidnap Chuck Bass and breed with him - good luck CREEEEPY!

The Crumberazzi

Can't hide from the Crumberazzi! Here we see Larry David himself watching the Red Sox/Yankees game in a sports club next to Fenway. He took a quick moment to give the Mightiest Crumb a dirty look as I unashamedly snapped a quick iPhone pic. He was nice enough to give me a wave as I thanked him for his just being there with a thumbs up. I must give a shout out to DJ B-Roc for spotting the Curb-feld genius on our stroll out of the Fenway.

(listen folks, I know the crumberazzi photos are crap quality but hey I have better things to do then buy pricey high quality SLRs to lurk around the city with documenting the uninteresting comings and goings of famous people. Feel free to send me $$ though and perhaps one of these days the crumberazzi will get that fancy SLR with the telephoto lens and snap some wonder shots of the recognizables, until then it's iPhone on the go)

Paul Delaney Art

I've just been made aware of a young contemporary artist from Cork, Ireland whose work of digital illustration, acrylic and mixed medium paintings has demanded an interest from my eye. Paul Delaney is his name and his bold and stylized prints make me want to buy a raw lofty SoHo pad and scatter them about so that I may invite friends and colleagues over to marvel and comment on my impeccable taste for contemporarily hip design. Seriously though, I implore you to check out his work here.

Tiny Reykjavik

You may have heard of Tilt-Shift photography, it's a way of making photos of real life objects look like miniature models and, as this crumb found out, it's really easy to do in Photoshop. Here is my first attempt. This is a shot I took of downtown Reykjavik a few years ago. As you can see the first one has been tilt-shifted and looks like a mini model, the second is the original. Try it yourself with this easy tutorial.

Pee & Poo

Hey kids, why don't you toss out that dirty ol' teddy bear and play with Pee & Poo instead! Out of Stockholm Sweden comes this plush cuddly duo that teaches children about excrement by encouraging them to get close and cuddle with it. Originally named Piss & Shit, this duo was marketed as action figures for Sweden's fan-geek collectables demographic until realizing that Sweden has no such demographic due to an overabundance of attractive people and the absence of Comic-Con. The brand has since evolved to include clothing for children and adults, plush key chains and temporary tattoos. We're eagerly awaiting the new accessories line rumored to include a corn necklace for Poo as well as the newest member of the team, Spew. You can buy all of your Pee & Poo products here, click on Bits & pieces (eww) to send e-cards, download a Pee & Poo wallpaper for your computer or even play the Pee & Poo memory game. Personally I think Poo would look great dangling from the rearview mirror of any chic driver's Saab convertible.

Terrorist @ A Child Of The Jago

Joe Corre, fashion mastermind and founder of the painfully sexy and luxurious lingerie brand Agent Provocateur, along with Simon "Barnzley" Armitage have released their Terrorist line to be sold in A Child Of The Jago, Corre's unique East London boutique. This collection is beyond cool and flawlessly welds 17th century conventions to an urban chic stye described as "Victorian Pimp."
The collection includes Apache cashmere hoodies, day-glo jackets camouflaged in Victorian pornography and digitally printed graphic t-shirts made of soft bamboo and adorned with pictures of Napoleon, Geronimo and classic works by 17th century artist William Hogarth.
Words cannot explain how much I want to bedizen myself in this fashion genius. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, it's not available in the U.S. or online just yet, only at A Child Of The Jago. Perhaps I will plan a trip across the pond with an empty suitcase. Though upon my return I suppose it'd be best to refrain from telling customs that I'm carrying a suitcase full of Terrorist.... then again, as Corre says, "It's just a word used to describe the enemy."

Zuriick sneaks

Always on the lookout for some fresh canvas slip-ons. Me thinks it's time to cop a pair of Zuriicks. Simple shoe, funky colors and a purple sole. Sure, why not? Summer's half over, better act fast. Get them here (though not before I do).

The Crumberazzi

Watch out Perez! The mighty crumberazzi has taken to the streets to snap all of the juicy celebrity gossip armed with his state of the art iPhone camera. Who do we have here? Why it's none other than one half of the mighty Olsen twins. Here we see Ashley Olsen getting something from the back of her black SUV. New Fashion samples? a pregnancy test!? DRUGS!?!? no no wait, it's groceries. How scandalous! The successful child tv star turned fashion designer is actually stocking up on groceries from Whole Foods for her, possibly a friend's? West Village apartment. Who does she think she is!? Stay tuned for more candid, exclusive crumberazzi photos.

Monogrenade - Ce Soir

Monogrenade delivers this lightly haunting and surreal, stop motion music video, Ce Soir. It's as if the Brothers Quay decided to film the ghost of Magritte's Son of Man going for a stroll and a dance through Van Gogh's Bedroom in Arles. Bon!

Sean Bones!

Hot off the streets of Trenchtown Brooklyn comes Sean Bones and their new album "Rings." Funky reggae grooves guaranteed to stamp summertime on the ears of any listener. "Poppy reggae... heavy and weird," - Sean Bones Sullivan (front man). Listen to the album here.

House of Imagination

Dear Syfy Channel, please allow me admittance into this house. I promise I will be nice and play by the rules. I can't promise, however, that I won't try and find Lou Diamond Phillips and challenge him to an epic game of lazer jai-alai.

Aretha on the keys

A good friend of mine passed this on to me as some "materials for human growth." Old footage of none other then Aretha Franklin on the keys playing "Don't Play That Song For Me." Amazing, she kills it. The sound is so good and that soul is second to none.

Get some Nuts!!

Snickers has always had some pretty good ad campaigns but this takes the taco. Nothing too surprising here, Mr. T makes a dramatic entrance and opens with "You makin' me mad sucka!" right before launching into a full on Snickers catapult aerial attack. I find this hysterical and can't get enough of this ad, which is fitting because I would also eat, live, breath and bleed Snickers (especially the ice cream bars) if it was socially acceptable.

Hail the King of Pop

It's no secret that Michael Jackon has influenced people in every corner of the world and his music and signature dance style has permeated pop culture relentlessly since he danced on the floor, in the round. Here is the latest homage to the King of Pop: the music video for Peter, Bjorn and John's It Don't Move Me features a random MJ impersonator practicing his moves in an array of unlikely locations while his soft and scruffy man-friend tags along and watches. The video is definitely strange but you have to admit the kid's got moves, and the funky indie pop style of PB&J compliment the video very well (or vice versa). Below are links to some other MJ homages, impersonations and tributes in pop culture over the years:

Weird Al - Eat it / Fat | Pepsi Commercial early 80's

Adidas - Break Up Service (Japan)

Kosai Sekine directs this funny new ad/short for Adidas out of of TBWA/London. To promote Adidas' new Originals Safety Collection, this piece give you a look inside the life of Akira, a man who runs the No Sad, Big Smile Break-Up Service. His heart grows cold as he delivers bad news to not-so-significant others all over Tokyo. A clever campaign executed beautifully.

Farewell Smooth Criminal

Michael Jackson has passed away. Truly a sad day. MJ was my childhood idol and the pinnacle of cool. He will live on as the King of Pop and a legend unparalleled by anyone. Goodbye Michael, you will be missed.

B-boys–Ichigecki (Nippon)

Video of Ichigecki, Japanese b-boy troupe, competing at the 2005 Battle of the Year (BOTY). This is one of the sickest b-boy routines I've seen (keep in mind that I'm no expert on 'B-boy routines'). These boys devote their lives to these moves, competing against the worlds best B-boys for a purse of nickels and dimes. They won 1st place in show for this routine but took 2nd place over all, losing in the final battle to the b-boy masters Last 4 One out of Korea. Ok, I know I'm talking 2005 here but regardless it's some next level shit. Just watch.

Bach's Mighty Little Fugue in Crumb minor

This is, to date, my all time favorite piece by J.S. Bach. His Little Fugue in g minor was named 'little' not because of it's importance (commonly misconceived) but to differentiate it from his Great Fantasia and Fugue in g minor. The fugue is in four voices, nicely illustrated here in this simple, MIDI file animation. It's a beautiful, complex and very powerful piece (in this humble crumb's opinion) and interesting to see each voice visually represented. Check out the links below for more J.S.B.

Stella ala Godard

Director Fredrik Bond out of Sonny, London, does a fantastic job on this ad for Stella Artois. He has successfully resurrected that French new wave cinema look in the spirit of Godard's Le Mépris, complete with a Bridgitte Bardot look-alike and a 007 style protagonist who's victoire écrasante ends in sartorial success with a cold beer in hand and garnished with humor. Bravo!

Intelligent Design

This is the cover of the latest issue of Boards Magazine, an industry publication about "the creative edge in commercial production. What makes this particularly interesting is the intelligent design that went into the making of this cover. Designed by the the UK based creative collective of artists, designers, musicians and writers known as Tomato, this cover represents, in my opinion, an exemplary instance of intelligent graphic design and conceptual creation in what they describe as a world where "the 'Now' very quickly becomes the 'Then.'" The thought process for this is described:

The Boards 'IT List' cover is a stream of consciousness. That was the brief: A collection of cultural signifiers that influence and affect our thoughts and actions. It's what's around us all, overlapping osmosis, familiar confusion. The ever-changing moment. We've made a multi-layered response. Each word stands for itself, but juxtaposed with others, takes on multiple meanings. How you read it, how far you look inside is what we're interested in. Visually. Don't call it a style, call it a process. - Tomato

The Elevator to Heaven (and Hell)

Imagine stepping into an elevator and witnessing your ascension to Heaven, or your descent to Hell–if you happen to be taking the elevator down to the street level. For those staying at the new Standard Hotel in NYC, prepare for a trip to eternity! Video artist Marco Brambilla answers the question on every mortal's mind, "what's it like?" with his video mural "Civilization," taking guests on a satirical journey to Heaven or Hell (depending on if you're going up or down). Based on Dante's Divine Comedy, the mural incorporates over 400 different video sources, several of which you'll recognize as samples from well known films. The installation is comprised of around 500 looped HD clips. Keep a sharp eye and you'll see which eternal kingdom the King of Pop himself inhabits. I knew it!

See more images and watch a larger HD Quicktime here.

We Have Band - "You Came Out"

26

Today marks the 26th anniversary of this crumb's existence. Another year has passed and I am now entering the aft-end of my mid 20's - or as father crumb might say, the back of the front. I'm very comfortable and satisfied by this; aging bothers me not. Aside from the probable physical complications I'm very much looking forward to becoming an old man- a ways to go. The picture above is of a tree that my parents planted when I was born. It too started as a little crumb and is now well on it's way to becoming a mighty timber. If I could talk to this tree I would tell it about all of my adventures and travels in the past 26 years, and I suppose I could listen to it tell me what it's been like being in the same front yard for the past 26 year. I would hope my stories would be more interesting. My one birthday wish is for nature to be as kind to me (and the tree) for the next 26 years as it has been thus far. If you asked me how many years I would like to live my answer would be exactly enough.

Professor Wexelblatt

Professor Robert Wexelblatt (Wex) is a novelist, poet and Humanities professor at Boston University's College of General Studies (tMc '06), and this crumb's sophomore professor. Wex is a true modern day scholar and exemplary lover of education and thought. He is brimming with knowledge, enthusiasm and wit. I would not be posting this if I did not deem it important to share him with those who are unaware. Furthermore, those of you who have an interest in philosophy, metaphysics, erudition, and fantastic story telling I urge to you pick up one of his books and give it a read. You can find them here. His latest, Zublinka Among Woman is outstanding (in this humble crumb's opinion). You can see the man himself reading an excerpt from it here.

Phish Lights

Ok ok, enough with the Phish, I know. I couldn't resist putting these beautiful shots taken at their show in Jones Beach the other night. Those of you who have been undoubtedly know the stunning light show that comes with seeing Phish live, all due to Chris Kuroda (often referred to as the 5th member of the band) the lighting designer/operator for Phish. Best in the biz, I'd say. Thanks "Toph!" To see some more stunning pics click here.
